How many positive/feel good messages do you receive in a day from your chat groups or other social media? How many such videos do you watch in a week? And when you do, do you get momentarily inspired by these messages and videos and tell yourself you are going to change yourself for the better or going to follow the advice/method given? This wish to change also happens when we try to follow/practice the teachings of our religions asking us to do good and be a better person.
I used to try very hard to become a better person; try to forgive those who made me angry, try to stop being angry, try to be more generous, diligent, filial, a better mom, a better wife – the list was endless!
Do you notice that very few people are actually able to make a lasting change, especially when they try to follow the advice/method given in self-help videos or books? It’s like being on a diet program that works for a little while; somewhere along the line, most people tend to fall back into their old habits/behaviour again. Few also notice that such a desire to change oneself is in itself a judgment that “you are not good enough” and when you seemingly fail to change, it causes more stress or disappointment to arise.
Is there perhaps a different approach which can yield more lasting results? The answer lies in understanding the workings of the mind! This mind, which is the source of all our thoughts, speech and action in every moment of every day, can be understood and in that journey of understanding, one will begin to live life in a more natural and easeful manner. Then, “becoming a better person” becomes a natural consequence or result of a growing clarity and wisdom about what life itself is all about and how you have been living yours so far.
Without that, any “self-help” will only have a temporary effect as you will be trying to change how your mind operates without understanding how it works in the first place. Telling your mind to change to the way you want it to, is like telling gravity to stop functioning so that you can start to fly!
So do come and join us in our many programs and retreats to start or deepen your journey in unravelling the mechanics of the mind – a natural and easeful journey to a better you! Those of us who have benefited immensely from this journey have made it possible for all of WISE’s programs and retreats to be fully sponsored. So come and see for yourself how this journey will benefit you and in turn, all those around you.
