It is not a coincidence that you receive this beautiful teaching and having the opportunity to discuss it together as a community. It takes an immense lot of conditions, which you may not be able to fathom now, to allow this teaching to be alive till this very day. Hence, it is a huge grace that you have given yourself the opportunity to receive it. The best gift for yourself is when you begin to know your mind better. Best gift in all ways, not only limited to elevating you from distress but seeing through the end of all distresses. Best gift is an understatement, it will slowly dawn upon you that this is in fact your refuge. That’s when true happiness is finally realized, true happiness from understanding.
By now, are you having the interest to be a little more aware of your mind? Do you give yourself a chance to explore more often the emotional state of your mind throughout the day? Which category of mental state does your mind gears towards? Aversive - as in dislike, or greed - as in liking? You may not be able to know unless you are interested in your mind, by observing it as much as you can throughout the day. Make it a habit to stay present to your mind. You will be surprised what is revealed to you.
You will find out the tendency the mind gears towards. You will find out how wholesome or unwholesome your mind is. You will also begin to find out that the quality of your mind is what determines the level of happiness, stress or unhappiness in any moment, proving to you again and again that it has nothing to do with the world outside. It has much to do with how your mind “reacts to the situation” instead of “because of the situation”. You can’t prevent situations. You can’t stop how your mind reacts. You can’t change the tendencies overnight. But you can begin to be aware of it as and when it plays out again, with right attitude at the forefront of your awareness, noticing them as ingrained patterns of the past occupying your present mind, instead of taking it personally as you. Aware of your mind as a natural unfolding of the past tendencies meeting you again at this moment when similar condition occurs again.
Soon you will have a kind of power of responsibility of your mind. Wisdom arises naturally when you develop it correctly. Soon you will find yourself having mental strength, not the kind of aggressive strength of pushiness, but a grounded, deep presence, with clarity and knowing how to respond strength.
You will find yourself happier, not from any external causes, but from deep understanding of things as they are. For once, you will taste what liberation is like when understanding meets with the object.
