Mother’s day is just around the corner and you can see and hear advertisements and reminders to appreciate mothers and show care and love. I pondered and decided to look up the dictionary meaning of “mother” and was drawn to this particular meaning; “To act as mother is to care and nurture”. Most of us have no qualms to show our appreciation for our mothers by giving them gifts, a good meal, holidays etc. There are times, these actions comes from the space of love and there are times they come from space of guilt and regret. As I explore this, an interesting question came to mind, how do we mother ourselves so that whatever action we take to appreciate our mothers come from love? You may next ask what does “mothering ourselves” got to do with appreciating our mothers?
Well, mothering ourselves can include an inward journey where self-care and self-nurturing is a priority. Hence we would need to learn new Right Information and View that will lead to understanding our mind rather than following the habitual pattern of acting out of guilt. The more we understand our mind, the more we are aware of our intentions and also what is motivating our intentions. With such clarity, the quality of our mind is wholesome and this in turn ensures that our actions (be it to ourselves or to our mothers) come from wisdom and love.
In short, when we are able to mother ourselves (that is, to love, care and nurture ourselves), we would see our mothers through the eyes of love. This is the greatest gift we can offer to our mothers for they will feel it deeply in their hearts.
So for a Happy Mother’s Day, start by mothering yourself !!
